Bars
A Few Sips
Pouring Ribbons
The all star team behind Alchemy Consulting (Toby Maloney, Jason Scott, Troy Sidle and Joaquin Simo), have quietly opened their first New York City project together, up a non-descript door (sound familiar?) in Alphabet City. Read MoreLa Capilla
I remember very clearly the first time I went to La Capilla, which now seems strange to me, since I was in the presence of my dear friend Julio Bermejo, and for anyone that knows Julio can rest assured we certainly had a few tequilas under our belt by the time we got to this hallowed bar I’d heard so much about. Read MoreRUM HOUSE
From the guys that brought us Ward III in Tribeca (which I do like very much, even though the wait for drinks can border on the ridiculous), comes this homage to the wonders of rum, rhum, ron, whatever you want to call it. Read MoreLittle Branch
New York City
Despite one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had with a doorman (Kevin, come back), I sometimes forget just what a great bar this can be. This is classic New York for me. Read MoreTommy’s
San Francisco
This is one of my all time favorite bars in the world, thanks in no small part to the gracious hospitality of dear friend and consumate host Julio Bermejo, who has become the face of this tequila mecca in San Francisco. His parents opened the joint in 1963 and it was a very sad day for the industry when Julio's father, Tommy suddenly passed away in April 2011, leaving behind a wonderful legacy at the restaurant that bears his name. Read MoreThe Summit Bar
New York City
It’s been a while coming but Alphabet City is experiencing its own bar renaissance in recent years. Read MoreP.J Clarke’s
New York City
I’m just going to come straight out with it: P.J Clarke’s is one of my favorite bars anywhere in the world. Well it is when one Doug Quinn is working. Read MorePegu Club
New York City
Celebrating its 5th birthday in 2010, Audrey Saunders’ mecca to mixology is stronger than ever, thanks to a loyal roll call of talented professionals, led by the Japanese perfectionist (not to mention, one of my personal favorites), Kenta Goto and the highly experienced Del Pedro. Read MorePKNY (formerly Painkiller)
It’s becoming quite a common saying amongst industry folks that after a session at this Lower East Side ode to Tiki, you’ve been ‘pain killed’. Well that was certainly true when Giuseppe Gonzalez was at the helm (he is no longer involved). Which may or not be a good thing depending on how many of their (too) lethal Zombies or Scorpion Bowls you choose to partake of. They do an awesome Pina Colada (yeah I said it) and are not shy on being liberal with the blue Curacao either. Read MoreOpera Bar
Sydney, Australia
Could there be a more jaw dropping view of Sydney’s harbour and its iconic bridge than from the al fresco setting of the Opera Bar at Circular Quay? Um, no there isn’t. This place is all about the view. That and ice cold beer. Read MoreMacao Trading Company
New York City
From the uber success to come out of Employees Only comes a second installment, Macao Trading Company, located in Tribeca. Based loosely on design elements derived from the Portuguese occupation of Macau in 1557, their cuisine covers both regions with decent results. Read More
